About the Circuit Court of Cook County

Established in 1964, the Circuit Court of Cook County is a court of general jurisdiction and the largest of the 24 judicial circuits in the state of Illinois, serving over 5.2 million residents living and working within the County’s 1,652 square miles. The Cook County Circuit Court has jurisdiction over the City of Chicago and its 126 surrounding suburbs. Over 1 million cases are filed in this court each year.

In order to accommodate its vast caseload, the court is organized into three functional departments: County, Municipal, and Juvenile Justice and Child Protection.

The County Department includes the following Divisions: Law, County, Chancery, Domestic Relations, Probate, Domestic Violence, Criminal, and Pretrial. The Municipal Department is organized into six geographic subdistricts. The Juvenile Justice and Child Protection Department is divided into separate Juvenile Justice and Child Protection divisions.

The Circuit Court of Cook County is a unified court system in which all trial courts are consolidated under the Chief Judge. Currently, the Chief Judge is the Hon. Timothy C. Evans, who has centralized authority to coordinate and supervise the administrative functions of the court.

The Chief Judge is also responsible for assigning 400 judges throughout the court’s ten divisions and six geographic districts. The Chief Judge also appoints a presiding judge to each division and district; oversees the court’s Surety Section, the Juvenile Justice Section, and the Child Protection Resource Section; and appoints a judge to head each section.

Cook County Municipal District Courts

First Municipal District

The Circuit Court of Cook County’s First Municipal District has jurisdiction over the City of Chicago.

The First Municipal District hears cases involving: housing, eviction proceedings, small claims, licenses, misdemeanor criminal proceedings except for those heard in the Domestic Violence Division, felony preliminary hearings except for those heard in the Domestic Violence Division, ordinance and traffic enforcement, contract cases decided by alternative dispute resolution process, civil suits for damages up to $30,000, mandatory arbitration in suits with damages of $30,000 or less, and marriages and civil unions.

The First Municipal District operates different sections out of different locations. The Forcible Entry and Detainer Section (Eviction) is located in Suite 1404 of the Richard J. Second Municipal District

The Cook County Circuit Court Second Municipal District has jurisdiction over northern suburban Cook County, including the towns of Des Plaines, Evanston, Glencoe, Glenview, Golf, Kenilworth, Lincolnwood, Morton Grove, Niles, Northbrook, Northfield, Park Ridge, Skokie, Wilmette, and Winnetka.

The Second Municipal District hears cases involving orders of protection, stalking/civil no contact orders, housing, eviction proceedings, small claims, licenses, misdemeanor criminal proceedings, specialty court for veterans, felony preliminary hearings, ordinance and traffic enforcement, contract cases decided by alternative dispute resolution process, civil suits for damages up to $100,000, mandatory arbitration in suits with damages of $30,000 or less, name changes, marriage and civil union court, felony criminal cases, domestic relations, juvenile justice, and law division tort cases seeking damages in excess of $100,000.

Third Municipal District

The Circuit Court of Cook County’s Third Municipal District has jurisdiction over municipalities in the north western suburbs of Cook County, including Inverness, Mount Prospect, Norridge, Palatine, Prospect Heights, Rolling Meadows, and Rosemont.

This district hears cases involving orders of protection, stalking/civil no contact orders, housing, eviction proceedings, small claims, licenses, misdemeanor criminal proceedings, felony preliminary hearings, ordinance and traffic enforcement, contract cases decided by alternative dispute resolution process, civil suits for damages up to $100,000, mandatory arbitration in suits with damages of $30,000 or less, and name changes.

The Third Municipal District operates out of the Rolling Meadows Courthouse at 2121 Euclid Avenue, Rolling Meadows, IL 60008.

The Cook County Circuit Court’s Fifth Municipal District has jurisdiction over municipalities and townships in the southwestern suburbs of Cook County, including Alsip, Bedford Park, Bridgeview, Burbank, Evergreen Park, Forest View, Hickory Hills, Oak Forest, Oak Lawn, Orland Hills, Lemont, Lyons, Orland, Palos, Stickney, and Worth.
