About the Northern District of Georgia

Established by Congress in 1849, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia has jurisdiction over Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Newton, Rockdale, Banks, Barrow, Dawson, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Habersham, Hall, Jackson, Lumpkin, Pickens, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, White, Carroll, Coweta, Fayette, Haralson, Heard, Meriwether, Pike, Spalding, Troup, Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Gordon, Murray, Paulding, Polk, Walker and Whitfield counties.

The Northern District of Georgia currently has fifteen United States District Judges, including a Chief Judge, and nine United States Magistrate Judges.

The Northern District of Georgia Court has four divisions: the Atlanta Division, the Gainesville Division, the Newnan Division, and the Rome Division. The Atlanta Division includes: Cherokee, Clayton, Cobb, DeKalb, Douglas, Fulton, Gwinnett, Henry, Newton, and Rockdale counties. The Gainesville Division covers: Banks, Barrow, Dawson, Fannin, Forsyth, Gilmer, Habersham, Hall, Jackson, Lumpkin, Pickens, Rabun, Stephens, Towns, Union, and White counties. The Newnan Division includes: Carroll, Coweta, Fayette, Haralson, Heard, Meriwether, Pike, Spalding, and Troup counties. The Rome Division covers: Bartow, Catoosa, Chattooga, Dade, Floyd, Gordon, Murray, Paulding, Polk, Walker, and Whitfield counties.

The address for the Atlanta Division is: Richard B. Russell Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse, 2211 U.S. Courthouse, 75 Ted Turner Dr., SW, Atlanta, GA 30303.

The Gainesville Division operates out of the Sidney O. Smith Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse, 121 Spring St., SE, Room 201, Gainesville, GA 30501.

The Newman Division can be found in the Lewis R. Morgan Federal Building & U.S. Courthouse at 18 Greenville St., Newnan, GA 30263.

The Rome Division is housed in the U.S. Courthouse at 600 East First St., Rome, GA 30161.

Chief District Judge

The Chief District Judge of the Court is the Hon. Timothy C. Batten, Sr. The Chamber of the Chief Judge is located at the Richard B. Russell Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse. You can reach the Chief Judge’s Atlanta Chamber by calling (404) 215-1420 and Newnan Chamber by calling (678) 423-3020.

Chief Magistrate Judge

The Chief Magistrate Judge of the Court is the Hon. Russell G. Vineyard. The Chamber of the Chief Magistrate Judge is located in the Richard B. Russell Federal Building and U.S. Courthouse. You can reach the Chief Magistrate Judge by calling (404) 215-1375.

U.S. Attorney

The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Georgia is Ryan K. Buchanan, who previously worked as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the Northern District of Georgia for nine years.
