About the Northern District of Indiana

The U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Indiana has jurisdiction over the following counties: Adams, Allen, Benton, Blackford, Carroll, Cass, DeKalb, Elkhart, Fulton, Grant, Huntington, Jasper, Jay, Kosciusko, LaGrange, Lake, LaPorte, Marshall, Miami, Newton, Noble, Porter, Pulaski, Starke, Steuben, St. Joseph Tippecanoe, Wabash, Warren, Wells, White, and Whitley counties.

The Northern District was created in 1928 by an act of Congress, which divided Indiana into two separate districts, the Northern and the Southern Districts of Indiana.

The Northern District of Indiana has a total of fourteen judges. The court has nine Article III Judges and five Magistrate Judges.

The Northern District of Indiana operates four divisions: Fort Wayne, Hammond, South Bend, and Lafayette. The Fort Wayne Division includes Adams, Allen, Blackford, DeKalb, Grant, Huntington, Jay, LaGrange, Noble, Steuben, Wells, and Whitley counties. The Hammond Division serves Lake and Porter counties. The South Bend Division includes the following counties: Cass, Elkhart, Fulton, Kosciusko, LaPorte, Marshall, Miami, Pulaski, St. Joseph, Starke, and Wabash. The Lafayette Division covers Benton, Carroll, Jasper, Newton, Tippecanoe, Warren, and White counties.

The N.D. Ind. has courthouses located in each of the four divisions.

The Hammond Division operates out of 5400 Federal Plaza, Suite 2300, Hammond, IN 46320, and can be reached by calling (219) 852-6500.

The South Bend Division is located at 102 Federal Building, 204 S Main St., South Bend, IN 46601. You can reach this division by calling (574) 246-8000.

The Lafayette Division can be found in the Charles A. Halleck Federal Building, located at 230 North Fourth St., Room 105, Lafayette, IN 47901. The Lafayette Division can be reached by calling (765) 420-6250.

Chief District Judge
